Lincoln Square Arts Center
Faith in The Lincoln Square Arts Center started in 2001 as a small group of artists from Lincoln Square who viewed the fine arts as a vehicle for grappling with serious social issues. Since its inception, LSAC has resided at Berry United Methodist Church. Several members of Berry served on the Fine Arts Task Force, out of which LSAC grew. In our beginning days, the task force formulated the following goals as a result of our work as fine artists:
- to raise consciousness about contemporary social issues
- to encourage and support fine artists of all ages
- to offer high-quality fine art events at an affordable price
- to partner with other groups in meeting human needs
- to provide workshops for youths, adults and seniors in the community
In 2004, Lincoln Square Arts Center became an independent entity with its own 501C3 status. It's theatre, The Lincoln Square Theatre of Chicago, is a member of the League of Chicago Theatres. The arts center and theatre are housed at Berry United Methodist Church, located at 4754 N. Leavitt St., Chicago.
Over the past five years, the theatre has addressed issues of abuse, multi-racial friendships, AIDS, gay ordination, violence in schools, the Armenian Genocide, alcoholism, prejudice, homelessness and gifted youth. Plays are often performed with intergenerational casts-a unique offering in the Chicago theatre community.
To date, over 5,000 people have participated in events sponsored by the Lincoln Square Arts Center, including seven plays, two musicals, five staged readings, eight concerts, and fine arts classes for middle school youth and seniors.
Lincoln Square Arts Center has helped meet human needs by contributing or holding benefits for Global Alliance for Africa, BEHIV, Bonaventure House, Avon Breast Walk, Armenian General Benevolent Union and Berry United Methodist Church. LSAC hosted the first Gay Pride Week in Lincoln Square and raised funds for those living with AIDS.
